The minimum viable kit
Sony A7 IV + Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM. That's it. One body, one lens, covers everything from a tight talking head to a wide environmental establishing shot. The A7 IV's flip-out screen makes it usable as a self-shot vlogging camera.
Add audio (do this first)
Bad audio is what makes content feel amateur, not bad video. Add the DJI Mic 3 Dual Combo. Clip a transmitter to your shirt, drop the receiver in your hot shoe, done. The 32-bit float backup means you don't need to worry about levels — just hit record and talk.
Gimbal: yes or no?
If you're moving — walking, riding, following a subject — yes. Hire the DJI RS4 Pro. It takes the A7 IV + 24-70 GM combo comfortably and you'll get butter-smooth movement that does the work of a real Steadicam at a fraction of the size.
If you're shooting mostly static talking-head stuff and B-roll on a tripod, skip the gimbal and put the budget into a second day of hire instead.
Filters worth adding
Variable ND for shooting wide-open in bright Queensland sun (otherwise you'll be at f/8 all day and lose the cinematic shallow depth). A polariser if you're shooting any beach or water content. Tiffen Black Pro-Mist 1/8 if you want the slightly diffused, cinematic skin-tone look.
If you're shooting in low light
Swap the A7 IV for the A7S III. You lose the high-res stills, but if your final output is Reels, TikTok or YouTube you don't need the resolution. The low-light advantage is huge — you can shoot a sunset content piece an hour after the sun's gone and still look great.
