The best sunrise spots in Noosa.

A local photographer's guide to the best sunrise spots in Noosa Heads — from Tea Tree Bay to Hells Gates and Sunshine Beach. Times, parking and lens picks for each.

    1. Tea Tree Bay

Tea Tree Bay is the most reliable sunrise spot in Noosa. The walk in from the Noosa National Park entrance takes about 12–15 minutes, the bay faces east-northeast (perfect for late autumn through summer sunrises), and at low tide you get clean rock platforms to compose around.

Bring a 16-35mm for the wide bay shot, a polariser to cut surface glare on the water, and a 24-70mm if you want to isolate surfers or the headland. Park at the Park Road car park — full by 5:30am in summer.

    2. Hells Gates

Hells Gates is the dramatic cliff at the end of the National Park coastal walk. It's a 45-minute walk from the entrance, so leave well before first light. The reward is uncluttered ocean horizon, sea-cliff foreground and a clear east-facing aspect.

This is a 24-70 + 70-200 location. The wide makes the cliff feel cinematic; the long lets you compress the horizon and isolate any boats that drift through. Drones are not permitted in the National Park without QPWS approval.

    3. Main Beach (Hastings Street end)

Main Beach is the easy option — five minutes from your car, 30-second walk to the sand. The aspect is north-east, which works well for the broad warm glow rather than a dramatic horizon sun. Best for wide environmental shots, lifestyle and surf.

Lens pick: 24-105 f/4 G OSS. One lens covers the wide beach, the surfers, and tighter detail of the sand patterns. Add a polariser for the wet sand reflections.

    4. Sunshine Beach

Less crowded than Main Beach and longer — you can walk for an hour without seeing another tripod. Sunrise hits the sand at a low angle which makes for great long shadows and texture. Great for minimal compositions.

Lens pick: 50mm or 55mm prime for tight, graphic frames; 16-35 for the long beach perspective with a single subject.

    5. Lake Cooroibah

If the coast is blown out by southerly wind or the surf is messy, head inland. Lake Cooroibah at sunrise gives you mirror-flat water, mist over the surface in the cooler months, and zero crowd.

Lens pick: 70-200 to compress the mist and reflections. A drone gives you the best shot of the entire morning.

    6. Noosa River mouth (Noosa Spit)

The river mouth at low tide is a sleeper spot. Walk from the Noosa Woods car park along the spit. Look back across the river to the Heads with the rising sun lighting up the headland — strong rim light on the cliffs.

Lens pick: 70-200 to pull the headland in tight. Add a 5-stop ND for long-exposure water work.
